Chapter 05 · two futures, chosen by aspect

The future
będę, or a perfective present

Polish has two ways to speak about the future, and which one you use is decided by the aspect of the verb, not by taste. An imperfective verb has no simple future of its own and borrows będę. A perfective verb has its own future — built from exactly the endings you learnt for the present — and that future promises a result.

01

The two futures

AspectHow the future is madeExampleWhat it promises
imperfective impfbędę + infinitive, or będę + past formBędę pisać. / Będę pisał. / Będę pisała.a process, a habit, time spent — the end is not in view
perfective pfthe verb's own present-shaped formsNapiszę.one act, finished: the letter will exist

Both are future, and they are not interchangeable. Będę pisać list tells you what I will be busy with; the letter may never be finished. Napiszę list is a promise that the letter gets written.

Every form from Wiktionary. A perfective verb has no present tense — these are its future forms.

The sentence that does not exist

Będę napisać is not Polish. Będę only ever combines with an imperfective verb, because a perfective already has a future of its own. The same goes for będę zrobić, będę kupić — if the verb is perfective, drop będę and use the verb alone: zrobię, kupię.

02

będę — the auxiliary

będę is the future of być (to be), and it doubles as the auxiliary for every imperfective future. Learn it as its own six-form table; it is irregular and extremely common.

Personbyć — futureWith a verbMeaning
jabędębędę czytaćI will be reading

on / ona / onobędziebędzie czytaćhe / she / it will be reading
mybędziemybędziemy czytaćwe will be reading
wybędzieciebędziecie czytaćyou will be reading
oni / onebędąbędą czytaćthey will be reading

Będę is also simply “I will be”, with no other verb at all: Jutro będę w domu — tomorrow I will be at home.

03

będę pisać or będę pisał?

With the infinitive is the simpler and commoner choice, and the one to use while you are learning. The other shape puts the past form after będę, and because a past form carries gender, this version reports who is speaking:

FormWhoSentence
będę pisaćanyoneJutro będę pisać raport.
będę pisała manJutro będę pisał raport.
będę pisałaa womanJutro będę pisała raport.
będziemy pisaćany groupJutro będziemy pisać raport.
będziemy pisalia group with a manJutro będziemy pisali raport.
będziemy pisałya group of womenJutro będziemy pisały raport.
Which one to use

The infinitive version is neutral and always safe: będę pisać works for anybody. The gendered version is equally correct and very common in speech, but only when you know the gender fits. When in doubt, use the infinitive.

04

The perfective future looks like a present

This is the part that confuses everyone at first. A perfective verb has no present, so the forms that look like a present are in fact the future. Compare the two halves of one pair:

Personpisać impf — presentnapisać pf — future
japiszę — I write / I am writingnapiszę — I will write
typiszesznapiszesz
on / ona / onopiszenapisze
mypiszemynapiszemy
wypiszecienapiszecie
oni / onepisząnapiszą

The endings are identical. Only the aspect tells you which tense you are in — and that is why aspect has to become automatic before the future stops feeling strange.

The trap in the other direction

Because napiszę means “I will write”, you cannot use it to say “I am writing” right now. For the present you need piszę. A perfective verb is never present, in any sentence, ever.

05

The future of być and mieć

Być has an ordinary imperfective future with będę. For mieć (to have), Polish does not use będę mieć in careful writing — the usual future is będę miał / będę miała, and in speech będę mieć is heard too.

PresentFutureMeaning
Jestem w domu.Będę w domu.I am / I will be at home.
Mam czas.Będę miał czas. / Będę miała czas.I have / I will have time.
Mamy czas.Będziemy mieli czas.We have / we will have time.
Muszę iść.Będę musiał iść. / Będę musiała iść.I must / I will have to go.
Modals behave the same way

Musieć, móc and chcieć have no perfective partner in ordinary use, so their future is built with będę plus the past form: będę mógł, będę chciał. With móc the present forms already point forward — mogę to zrobić can mean “I can do it” or “I can do it later” — so the future is often left implicit.

06

Five traps

1
będę + perfective. Będę napisać, będę zrobić, będę kupić — all wrong. Drop będę: napiszę, zrobię, kupię.
2
Reading napiszę as a present. It is the future. If you want “I am writing”, it is piszę.
3
The wrong gender after będę. A woman says będę pisała, a man będę pisał. The infinitive version będę pisać avoids the question entirely.
4
Będę with a habit. A repeated future action still takes the imperfective: Będę codziennie czytać, not będę codziennie przeczytać.
5
Forgetting the future of być is będę, not będzie. Będzie is he / she / it will be. Będę is I will be.
